Shivapuri National Park which lies about 12 km north from the capital city of Kathmandu is the nearest national park & trekking region from Kathmandu. Trekking routes to Nagarkot, Gosaikunda, Helembu, and Langtang National Pak also pass through the park. The area lies in a transition zone between subtropical and temperate climates. The park is home to some rare species of birds, butterflies, and mammals like wild cats and snow leopards. Moreover, the Bagmati & Bishnumati rivers in the Shivapuri area are the main sources of drinking water for Kathmandu Valley. There are also some important Hindu and Buddhist religious and cultural sites inside the park. The Nepal Government declared the area as the ninth national park in 2002.
