The Koshi Tappu Region is formed by the largest river of Nepal – the Sapta Koshi, on its floodplains in the eastern lowland Terai area. The Koshi Tappu was initially was declared a protected area for being a habitat of the only remaining population of Wild Buffalo (Bubalus arnee) commonly known as the Arna Buffalo. However, in the recent years the Reserve is getting more popular as a habitat for different native and migratory bird species. The Reserve is also home to other animal species like Hog deer, Wild boar, Spotted deer, Blue bull, and Rock Python. Moreover, along with more than 80 species fish, such rare species like Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphin have also been recorded in the Koshi River around the Tappu area. Koshi Tappu region is increasing getting popular for its unique tropical climate on the banks of one of Asia’s largest rivers. One can also enjoy the spectacular views of several Himalayan peaks including world’s fifth highest mountain Mt. Makalu at 8463 meters. The Reserve’s accessibility and the human settlements around the area have compelled Nepal Government to enforce entry permit regulations for the Koshi Tappu. Koshi Tappu Permit & Regulations: Entry fee: For Foreign Nationals: Rs. 500 per person per day For SAARC Nationals: Rs. 200 per person per day For Nepali Citizens: Rs. 20 per person per day - A separate permission is required for filming inside the protected area.
- Purchasing of plant or wildlife products is illegal.
- All flora and fauna inside the Reserve are protected, and must not be disturbed.
- Walking/traveling inside the Reserve between sunset and sunrise in prohibited.
- Rubbish must be disposed of in designated areas, and non-biodegradable items like plastics and bottles must be carried out by the visitors.
